2014 Comic Convention Banners

The two banners I've designed for the 2014 Comic Conventions I'll be attending, hopefully Baltimore ComicCon and Richmond Wizard World.

  1. It is good to see you posting on your blog, again. It's long overdue.

Of the two banners in question, I think that the horizontal one (black one) is the better of the two. That said, I don't think that either of them doing a particularly good job of showcasing your artistic talents.

The vertical banner relies upon duplicate use of the same images. If I may suggest, perhaps use the front covers of the various comic books that you have done as a border along the bottom edge, and along the top edge, do some original special effects lettering for the Nick Justus text, and run it across the top. Then, in the middle, why not just draw a new piece of original artwork?

Numerous pieces of your artwork are visually impressive. They possess - and make - strong visual impact. Yet, in both of these banners, the actual artwork that you display has been shrunk down to where it makes no real impact.

Instead, you have resorted to text to make the banners have visual impact, even though art is your forte', and not text. What is wrong with this picture? It strikes me as the wrong approach.

Of course, on your actual table/booth, you will likely have a multitude of your artwork on display. But, the banners, themselves, are likely to comprise the single biggest opportunities for making a visual impact. Or, am I wrong on that point?

  2. True, I see your point. I have almost a year before the Cons so I'll take your advice/suggestions into consideration and maybe continue to edit them. I like your idea about producing a new piece of art for them. For these I was mainly relying on the colors to attract the eye from a distance, not really relying on the art at all. And yes, I hope to have plenty of copies of all my comics for sale, being doing commissions, and have prints for sale!
