Some New Inking Going On!

Feeling invigorated and starting to ink issue #5 of Jesus E. Lee.

  1. The image size posted is fairly small, so it's hard to make out the detailing. From what I could tell, though, the debris chunks in the bottom right panel are not those minute debris particles that I hated in a few of the panels from some earlier issues. Don't return to those, anytime soon.

On a separate note, even when you have no new art to post, it would be nice to see you post a few words about how you do the art that you do. For instance, as an example, what kinds of pens or other tools of the trade do you use, and what do you prefer, for a given artistic task or a particular style of art that you are going for?

You are the Artist of Mystery, Nick Justus. I don't mean your personal life - but rather, your artistic self.

What have you tried that you dislike, as far as certain instruments or techniques?

Having a blog that has virtually nothing on it is probably not an ideal way of growing a fan base.

    1. Very good questions, Charles. Within the next week I'll try post on the tools of the trade I like to use, etc.

That debris technique you say you don't like is called spattering, and it's an artsy fartsy technique a lot of us comic artists tend to like. I love it and think it always looks cool for blood spraying, dust, small fragments, spit, etc. I use it when I think it's appropriate. I usually do it with a toothbrush or flicking from my inking brush. I've also done it with spraying the ink through a straw or snapping of a traditional pen nib.

To each his own when it comes to artistic tastes, and that's cool. Some like super polished work, others like 'messier' art. I like a mixture of the two and that's kind of what I try to go for in my work.

  2. Understood, although even within this narrow category of art, I think that some examples of this splatter approach have worked much better than others.

The best use of this technique by you that I have encountered to date is the one found at this link:
